A Study on Clinical Characteristics of Psychiatric Inpatients with Nurse¢¥s Observation Scale for Inpatients Evaluation


Abstract
The subjects consisted of 80 patients with various psychiatric illness who were admitted to the Dept. of Psychiatry, St. Mary¢¥s Hospital and Kangnam St. Mary¢¥s Hospital from Sep. 7, 1990 to Sep. 14, 1990. The authors attempted to examine the clinical characteristics of psychiatric inpatients using Nurse¡¯s Observation Scale for Inpatients Evaluation(NOSIE), which was designed to evaluate the clinical and behavioral status of psychiatric inpatients.
The results as follows
1. The scores of NOSIE were significantly different between the patients admitted the close and open wards, The patients in close wards were significantly scored higher in negative factors, than those of patients in open wards. But the patients in open wards were scored higher in positive factors than those of patients in close wards. The factors which was shown significant differences in scores of NOSIE between the patients admitted to the close and open wards were neatness, competence, cooperation, irritability and psychosis.
2. There were significant differences in the scores of NOSIE among the patients divided by DSM- III-R diagnoses. Schizophrenics showed significantly lower scores in positive factors than the other diagnostic groups. Bipolars showed significantly higher scores in negative factors. So, there were significant differences among the 3 diagnostic groups in other factors except depression.
3. As for the difference in factors by the closed and open ward, there were significant differences in irritability in bipolars, in social interest and irritability in major depression and neatness, competence and cooperation in schizophrenia.
